Wednesdays, 5:30pm-8:30pm (Hawaii Standard time), 10 weeks, September 30, 2026 – December 16, 2026. No class Oct. 14 and Nov. 25
TAUGHT ONLINE
Fee: $325
Instructor: David Ulrich

Poet Theodore Roethke writes: “The artist (not the would be): you may have deep insights — but you also need the sense of form. Sometimes the possession of the first without the second may be tragic. Good poets wait for the muse, the unconscious to spring something loose, to temper and test the promptings of the intuition with the pressures of craftsmanship: they can think while they sing.”
Compelling photographs combine meaningful content, a strong sense of form along with an effective use of the visual language, and are well-crafted. The artist’s technique can be used as a vehicle for the interpretive expression in the image. This class addresses the dynamic interplay between form, content, and technique.
Class participants explore elements of form, such as color, composition, and light, and seek meaningful content derived from their core interests and their search for authentic vision. Technique is examined to assist participants in giving images the expressive strength they deserve.
Class content consists of lectures, slide shows, demonstrations, enjoyable and challenging assignments personalized for participants, and weekly critique of participants images. Prerequisite is having some form of image editing capability on your phone or computer.
Open to photographers of all levels and with any type of camera, including cell phones.
Class takes place on Zoom software. Please submit 6-8 jpg images for the first class that are drawn from your archive and are most representative of your image-making and your core way of seeing. Instructor will send Zoom link and instructions for submitting images through Dropbox or Google Drive prior to the first class.
For an eight week, online version of class, please join Rocky Nook’s creative community, The Nook. September 22 – November 10, 12-2pm, Pacific time.
