Photo books have become a thriving industry within the photographic medium and have captured the interest of many photographers producing bodies of work seeking to maintain creative control of their modes of presentation and the public display of their finished products. There has been a veritable explosion of commercially and self-published photo books, Zines, hand-crafted books, and bound/boxed presentations that bypass gallery walls and go directly into the hands of your audience.
Explore the art of creating, editing, and sequencing a strong meaningful body of work using a variety of approaches: narrative, visual, emotive, and conceptual. Review the principles of designing books and Zines, investigate publishing options (self and commercial), and consider vendors, materials, printing and papers, and production concerns within a supportive environment of creatively-minded photographers and artists.
Class content consists of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and critique. Please come to class with your ideas about developing a body of work that can range from very small (6-10 images) to a sprawling, unmanaged body work consisting of dozens to hundreds of images. There is room for everyone to find the presentation mode that fits your creative dreams and visions. Printed media and pdf solutions will be discussed and the intent is that participants will leave class with some form of a finished product: a Zine, book dummy, Blurb book, or even a chapter in a larger exploration.
Open to photographers of all levels and with any type of camera, including cell phones.
Class takes place on Zoom software. Please submit 6-8 jpg images for the first class that are from your intended project or most representative of your image-making and your core way of seeing. Instructor will send Zoom link and instructions for submitting images through Dropbox or Google Drive prior to the first class.
David Ulrich is a professor and co-director of Pacific New Media. He is an active photographer and writer whose work has been published in numerous books and journals. Ulrich`s photographs have been exhibited internationally in over 75 exhibitions. He is the author of The Widening Stream: the Seven Stages of Creativity, Zen Camera: Creative Awakening with a Daily Practice in Photography, and The Mindful Photographer: Awake in the World with a Camera (Rocky Nook 2022).
