Warren R. Loos

The Inner Life of Flora

In my early 20s, I photographed western “landscapes” I had not seen before through the window of an International Harvester Cabover. At the time, I was a long-haul trucker, an independent owner-operator running a 48 state operation. For the last 30 years, I have been a practicing Medical Psychologist, working with medically ill patients.

In 2013, I returned to photography needing an artistic outlet looking to transform what had become obscured. I am comfortable being an observer, both as a photographer and a psychologist, looking beyond appearance into subtle patterns to make sense of our perceptions and what we experience.

Less interested in the appearance of things; that which is manifest or first seen – what I find more interesting is what lies behind or underneath what we initially see. Here, one finds nuance, texture, gesture, highlights, and shadows, lines and forms, symbols, and metaphors that reveal the richness of who we are and communicate how we find ourselves in the world.

This project, conceived during a time of confinement within smaller spaces, was an in-studio exploration. Using a 100 mm Macro lens, it is a study of small air plants and single flowers, their surfaces, and the spaces that lie beneath. Within these intimate spaces, an interplay of light can reveal forms not previously seen by the naked eye, alone, discoveries that might excite within a meditative experience.
