Point of Confluence
Within this body of work, I explore the many dimensions of the natural landscape, viewing it as an expression rather than an object. My focus is on both the place and the moment that the elements of nature combine, a point of confluence. This is an exploration of nature and self, a combined inner and outer landscape.
I began with curiosity. If I could listen deeply, could it lead to an understanding of what was being communicated by nature and if so, what, if any insight could it provide? As I was drawn to certain locations, I began to sit in nature with both reverence and stillness. In doing so, I noticed an exchange would occur where the core elements earth, air, water, and fire started to interact with both nature and myself. Through this intimate observation, I began to see deeper into a relationship between the natural environment and the landscape within my own being. Leading to a feeling of vastness and a connection to all things. Blurring the boundaries between the physical and spiritual.
These photographs were made on the islands of O’ahu and Kaua’i in the Hawaiian islands. Where the spirit of the land or said in Hawaiian culture the “Mana” is palpable. While creating this body of work I was witnessing both destruction and creation as I found nature is in a constant flux. Weaving, pushing, pulling, in a dance of harmony perceived as chaos. While immersing myself in this symphony of interactions, a new sense of self emerged, a type of rebirth—born anew, fostered by the power of nature and the engagement of the creative process.
