Along the Ala Wai

The Ala Wai gets a bad rap sometimes.   A murky greenish-brown with a scummy, slimy surface, the canal is so contaminated with toxins that if your canoe tips over and you fall in, get to an emergency room as soon as possible.  Plus it smells.

And yet, at certain times of the day—early mornings and late evenings—it’s one of my favorite places to photograph in all of Oahu.   Even with traffic whooshing past and sirens screaming by, there’s a deep quiet there, a calm, intriguing beauty.

With these nine photographs, I have tried to capture how I feel and what I see as I walk along the Ala Wai.
