Hālona’s Cove
Hālona, means to “peer or be watchful”, and is the name given to the blowhole that resides just around the eastern mouth of the Hālona Beach Cove. It is thought that Hālona’s sea spray carries with it all the knowledge that it has seen and is willing to share (1).
These images lead the viewer on a tour of the space and the people I watched for the past four months. I found joy, play, humor, love, and reverence. Photography is the medium I use for self discovery. It is usually in the middle of a project when I discover why I immersed myself in a specific subject matter. It wasn’t until I took my 12 year old daughter with me that I understood why I was drawn to this place.
As the camera sat on the tripod and gathered it’s two minutes of light, we walked the beach in and out of the frame. The joy in her eyes evident, as she called me over to hold the hermit crab she’d just found. What I had learned, from these final images, I’d like to think strengthened under the watchful eye of Hālona, was a re-awakening to the impermanence of the human condition. A reminder to treasure the moments we have left.
