City of Night
“City of Night” is an ongoing photography project approaching the dark and glimmering mysteries of urban light and structure in Los Angeles. One can find celebration, a vibrant social atmosphere, and a creative space for self-expression and connection amid the quiet melancholy and desolation.
I aim to find, capture, and convey the myriad paradoxes. There are contradictions between the lurid and the magical, the decadence and the decay, the beaconing neon glow and the grit. Peace can be found in some of the slower moments, in the subtle dance with the anonymous passerby, and in the night as a character itself. The human subjects, often shadowy or blurred, yet a fully-alive presence within the glaring commercial landscape, reflect humanity’s disconnect from nature.
I endeavor to show the city at night as a metaphor for the darkness and the light of the human experience.
