Gail Atwater

Windows of Wonder

Awe, inspiration and dancing light: these are goals of stained glass design. Beginning in Roman times, crude glass mosaics portrayed stories for congregants who could neither read nor write. Stained glass in vaulted grand cathedrals of Europe met its peak in the Middle Ages and continues to amaze; modern stained glass designs reflect today’s sensibilities.

I am awed by stained glass and its relationship to architecture, the play of light throughout the day, and surprising reflections on indoor surfaces. Discovered in places as distant as Texas and the Middle East, this is my treasure trove of Windows of Wonder.
