Film and Video

FACULTY FOCUS: New Workshop Highlights in Film/Video, Spring 2013

The idea of filmmaking may seem a tad unfathomable but not everyone needs to be a famous director in order to develop quality films. Pacific New Media is offering a nice range of courses built to help you get your story told or an audience to enjoy. Covering traditional film and movies as well as animation, there’s a little something for everyone.

Every film, regardless of medium, begins as a story. Refining that story and directing it on screen should be one of the primary focus of any director. Writer/director Ramin Bahrani focuses on improving these elements in his Narrative Filmmaking workshop. Not only will the class cover topics such as props, clarity, shot progression, simplicity, and so forth, but students will also be able to participate in hands-on direction of scenes, as well as hear of Bahrani’s personal process when developing his own work.

At Any Price by Ramin Bahrani

Writer/director Ramin Bahrani’s films have premiered and screened at Venice, Cannes, Sundance, Berlin and Toronto. His awards include the FIPRESCI prize for best film, the “Someone to Watch” Independent Spirit Award, and was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2010 film, critic Roger Ebert proclaimed Bahrani “the director of the decade.” His new film, At Any Price(Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron) premiered at the Venice Film Festival and later screened at Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals. Bahrani is a professor at Columbia University’s graduate film program.

While filmmaking can be a very fun and enriching experience, there still is a large level of responsibility required to come out on top. Kiku Terasaki tackles this in her workshop Film Scheduling: How Many Days Will it Take to Make Your Movie. Learn to make the most out of every one of your shoot sessions by making a day-by-day plan to run your filmmaking schedule by. Planning what gets done when and for various factors that may affect said plans can be pivotal not only to the success of your film but to your budget as well.

Kiku Terasaki began as a script development executive at HBO and Paramount Television, moved on to produce, production manage, assistant direct and even post-production supervise independent films, television and commercials. She is a freelance producer in Los Angeles and also teaches producing and production management in the film school at Chapman University.

Once you have your film recorded and saved, the next step is post production. An Introduction to Adobe Premiere Pro is made in order to give users unfamiliar with Premiere Pro a better understand of both the interface and features offered by the software. Advance Editing Skills With Adobe Premiere Pro takes things a step further covering more advance techniques such as color correction, multi-camera editing and working with other Adobe products such as Photoshop and After Affects. Both classes are taught by Abba Shapiro and offer skills that can be applied to both personal and professional projects.

Abba Shapiro is an award-winning writer/producer/director with 30 years experience in video and film production and an Adobe and Apple Master trainer. He has worked for a wide range of commercial, corporate, and federal clients, including USA Today, The Associated Press, NASA, and CNN.

If prefer telling your cinematic stories through drawings, look into Cartoon Fun with 2D Hand-Drawn Animation with Dan Boulos. The class will involve creating your own short animation drawing with professional tools. If you want to take your animations home just bring a pen-drive.

With over 20 years of professional experience, former Disney animator Dan Boulos animated Beauty and the Beast, Space Jam, and The Prince of Egypt. Dan taught animation for five years at the prestigious California Institute of the Arts. He owns and operates Wiki Wiki Cartoons and teaches character animation for the Academy of Creative Media, UHM.
