Sierra Leone: Hope and Recovery
Ravaged by brutal civil war in the
In 2018, I had the privilege of being the embedded photographer with a nonprofit orthopedic field team as they visited hospitals, field clinics, staff, patients and their families throughout Sierra Leone. I met many who were disabled due to war mutilation, accidents, disease, or birth defects. I met Abass, a motorcycle accident victim determined to return to competing in martial arts; Baby Mary, whose mother Sia thought she would never walk; young parents who bravely brought their children to the clubfoot clinic despite local customs; locally trained medical technicians applying their skills by helping others; Edward, a cobbler who is himself disabled, now making prosthesis for others; children in a home for the disabled who manage joyful play despite their disabilities, and the young Ali born with clubfoot but now wants to be footballer.
I listened to their stories.
