Bret Nainoa Mossman

Native Birds of Hawai‘i
Bret Nainoa Mossman, is a master’s student, conservationist, and photographer living in Panaʻewa on Hawaiʻi Island. He has been working to bring the native birds of Hawaiʻi back to the people of Hawaiʻi through his photography. Bret works full time for the Hawaiʻi Island Natural Area Reserve Program, and is curently working on finishing his masters thesis on the ʻĀkiapōlāʻau. In his spare time and outside of work hours Bret has been traveling to extremely remote areas of Hawaiʻi to photograph our incredible native birds. Bret has always felt a deep connection to the birds, forests, and places that are Hawaiʻi, and is working towards inspiring that same care in others. Hawaiian birds are some of the most endangered species on the planet, and Hawaiʻihas become known as the endangered and extinction capitol of the world. Bret hopes that through his work he can help rekindle the connection that people once had to the native birds of Hawaiʻi and reshape the future from a path towards extinction to a direction filled with the vibrant colors and sounds of our native birds. To learn more about Hawaiʻi’s native birds and see more of Bret’s photography check out his Facebook (Birds of Hawaiʻi the Past and the Present) and Instagram (@birds_hawaii_pastpresent).
