Alison Uyehara

Off-Duty Dreams

In a world encumbered by the frenetic pace of modernity, my photographic series serves as a testament to the allure of a simpler life. While attending a workshop in Whidbey Island, Washington, I embraced a week-long respite from my hectic life in Honolulu. Far from the hum of Whidbey’s summer tourists, the tiny cottage I lodged in was a peaceful and lush retreat, ripe for photographic exploration.

Immersing myself in the serenity of the bucolic island landscape, I found symbolic elements to weave into dreamlike images, releasing my inescapable subconscious. Beneath their modest surface, these domestic vignettes allude to a range of feelings and concepts, including preservation, separation, obligation, hope, freedom and love.
