Contemporary Photography in Hawai‘i 2019: Gallery

Eleventh Annual Survey Exhibition Sponsored by Pacific New Media Foundation

THE ARTS at Marks Garage
August 1 to 31, 2019

This juried exhibition is open to all artists in Hawaii using photographic processes: analog or digital, color or BXW, alternative processes and mixed media explorations. Contemporary Photography in Hawaii 2019 offers artists a venue for exhibiting work and provides a snapshot of the “state of the art” of photography in Hawai‘i.

This year, we received approximately 400 entries from 100 photographers and accepted 49 images for the exhibition.

Juried/Curated by Matt Mallams, Photo Editor, Hana Hou! magazine

Juror’s Statement
The criteria I used for the jury were: content, originality, and personal vision. Does the photograph speak? Does the image have a degree of technical mastery? Did the artist stretch beyond their boundaries to create an original, unique image, illustrating their own visual aesthetic? I found numerous photographs that fulfilled the criteria and many themes were evident, such as street photography, environmental concerns, tourism and development, and the human condition. The selected images ask us to look, feel, and reflect upon where we are now, in this time and place. .
