Tenth Annual Survey Exhibition Sponsored by Pacific New Media Foundation
THE ARTS at Marks Garage
August 3 to 31, 2018
This juried exhibition is open to all artists in Hawaii using photographic processes: analog or digital, color or BXW, alternative processes and mixed media explorations. Contemporary Photography in Hawaii 2018 offers artists a venue for exhibiting work and provides a snapshot of the “state of the art” of photography in Hawaii.
Juried/Curated by PNM Core Faculty: Alison Beste, David Ulrich, & Tracy Wright Corvo
Jurors’ Statement
This year, we received over 300 entries and accepted 45 images for the exhibition. Much of the work was very high quality and the jurors made every effort to include as many strong works as possible. As usual, the jurors attempted to reflect back the strength and diversity of contemporary photography in Hawai‘i. We were pleased to find many themes that mirror both the mood of our times and the prevailing issues of the day: immigration, climate change, identity, displacement, and culture in its many forms, as well as images that explore the ocean, land, and environment of Hawai‘i. We found both darkness and light, celebration and critical commentary, and the paradox of beauty amidst challenging conditions.
