Juror’s Statement
Compelling images often have something indefinable, qualities that go beyond objective criteria such as intellectual and political intent, technical competence, or sophistication of idea. Some images have presence due to Je ne sais quoi—literally, “I know not what.” What is it that may draw our attention to certain photographs? As musician Fats Waller expressed: “One never knows, do one?”
The process of selecting 56 images from 570 entries involved first eliminating clichés and genre images seeming to lack meaningful content and clear vision. Overall, we were interested in each photographer’s method of exploration, whether attempting to chart a way from one point to the next through documentation, or attempting to understand and express the purpose of a journey through manipulation. The images in this exhibit were selected based on elements of content, context, and feeling—ineffable qualities that invite further investigation. In some, the quality of familiarity, rendered profoundly, moved us; in some, the notion that art is always responsive to advances in science and technology refreshed us; in some, evidence that the artist was influenced by earlier contributors to the art of photography encouraged us.
The entries were juried solely on digital submissions. Selecting images from digital projection files with the hope of creating an engaging exhibition of prints was a visual and intellectual challenge. Digital files may give impressions quite different from images presented as prints on various media.
To be among those not chosen may be disgruntling, but should never be disappointing. In our work, we keep in mind the Japanese phrase commonly used in Hawai‘i, gambatte kudasai (keep at it, don’t give up).
